Warning: My username on various websites is currently being used in a hacking attempt.

This morning I received close to 30 emails requesting password resets on “Frumph” and “phil”   as the username.   From sites that I have worked on or helped with in the past.

It is imperative that if I have an account on your system, delete it or verify that the access is down to ‘subscriber’

Important as it is,  you NEED to set people back to subscriber after they’re done helping you out, the only person who should ever have consistent administrator access is YOU, no one else.   (unless in the case of those people who have a site administrator helping them out, but you get the idea.. no 3rd party people)

– Phil

Update: 4:36am –

.. went through the emails and checked the sites out, .. half of them I don’t even remember ever EVER being involved with but still WordPress sent a password change request????

example:  http://www.friedchickenandcoffee.com/

I have no idea who that is.

Update: 2:49pm –

Turns out this happened for a huge amount of people, not just me. Something fishy. I am going to believe that it’s something that has to do with ‘peoples information’ that got stolen/hacked from such places like Chase and Home Depot more likely the yahoo hack that happened recently.

Ugh, the highs and lows.

Okay, so I’ve come to the realization that i’m not doing so well with the getting-things-done-for-people category.   Basically, when i’m supposed to be working on something -for- someone I am being a little flakey.

However,  I have noticed that if someone has me in chat with them someplace – like facebook or skype.  That I am really focused on it at that time.

So, what i’m going to do is this.   If you would like some assistance from me, get me into a chat someplace where it be easy to chat back and forth and let’s do it.     .. just warn ya though if it’s through emails or other methods I have lately tended to be a bit flakey so get my attention and all is well.

Oh yeah, until January all work is free, don’t donate; the good people of the WebComic community graciously donated to help me get a vehicle recently and covered it already.

Broken Links and Search Engines

Friday WordPress Comic Easel Tip.   .. Checking your site for broken links; links that return 404 or server not found.

Plugin:  Broken Link Checker by Janis E.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/broken-link-checker/

Okay, now .. why should you check your site for broken links?  .. only one reason,  .. search engines.   I’m not a search engine freak but I do know that I want my site to be recognized on search engines.    One of the things that I learned while researching why to not have broken links is that broken links signify to search engines that the site could be “defunct” or in a state of non-use, so it lowers it’s ‘value’ when it finds them, the more you have the worse it gets. .. .This is what one website says about it:

“Broken Links: Having too many broken links on a page may be a sign of a neglected or abandoned site. The Google Rater Guidelines Document uses broken links as one was to assess a homepage’s quality.”

One of the things I noticed while using the plugin mentioned above is that it also checks COMMENT AUTHOR links, ya know .. those URLS people can put in with their name and email when making a comment..   Apparently those can count against you as well!  .. gah.

If you’re like me and you’ve been around a very long time with comments dating back years, most of those people have changed urls several times or even gave fictitious ones .. well I don’t want those to count against me. … So using the plugin before, there’s a clickable thing on it that says “unlink” and it automatically gets rid of the link.

There’s another tab for ‘redirects’ .. ignore the ones that say 200 OK and fix the ones that say anything but that.

Note: There’s a ‘status’ column on the plugin, ONLY get rid of ones that return 404 error or server not found, the other status’s are fine, as far as I know if anyone wants to interject on that.

– Phil

Note2: I’ve been at it for several hours now fixing broken links in posts and such;  expect to be spending some time on it.

—- I noticed a lot of people put in www.theirsite.com when their site is recognized by theirsite.com without the www part of it.   When giving people your URL make sure you use the correct one, the one that comes up in your URL bar when going to it.

  1. Ajax Thumbnail Rebuild
    • This plugin allows you to rebuild all of your media library images.  If you want to change their dimensions you can change them within the wp-admin -> settings -> media area.   Because of the way it works with the Ajax it will not burden your hosting.  Do not use if you also use the post thumbnail editor that is listed below.
  2. Akismet
    • The #1 (number one,  NOT hashtag one) anti-comment-spam tool available for WordPress.   It’s bundled with WordPress,  enough said.
  3. CodeStyling Localization
    • Translate anything in WordPress to another language and generate your own .pot / .mo files – never have to stress about finding plugins and themes that are in the language that you want.
  4. Convert Post Types
    • Let’s face it, custom post types have a huge impact in plugins;  Converting those posts that are set into a specific post type into a different one or back to posts is sometimes necessary.
  5. Custom Post Type Permalinks
    • Want to design a special look for your custom post type’s permalinks?  This plugin allows the end user to create their own style that they like.   The only drawback is that it will do it for all custom post types you have and you can’t disable it not doing it for some that you don’t want to have changed.  (ref: bbpress)
  6. Easy Google Fonts
    • A very nice way to implement fonts to elements on your site; it does all of the work for you and even adds it to the WordPress customizer.   You can add more control css element font sections by using the settings -> google fonts area.
  7. Google Analyticator
    • This plugin is the king of adding Google Analytics to your site.   Easy to use interface with a great dashboard visual.
  8. Jetpack
    • Speaking of king of plugins.   Jetpack is a must have due to all of the modules that it has inside;  It’s backed by Automattic so you know it’s written and kept up to date.    There’s really just too much it can do to list.
  9. Jetpack Mobile Theme Featured Images
    • ^ Nevermind that Jetpack has a great Mobile theme available inside of it, it’s missing some core features so extra plugins help.   This one allows the mobile theme to display the featured images of posts.
  10. Marketpress (lite)
    • The best way to sell items online, it’s so easy to use.   The lite version (non-pay) has the paypal integration ready and waiting for you to start making some cash.  The problem with buying the pro version is that it’s too damn expensive and you have to resubscribe and spend even more money for any updates, so stick with the lite version.
  11. Post Thumbnail Editor
    • By Default the thumbnails generated when you add an image to the media library create a central box view of an area of your image as the thumbnail, .. it crops it and you have no control over what is displayed as that thumbnail.   With this plugin it adds the ability to crop your own thumbnails the way that you want.
  12. Syntax Highlighter
    • Some of us can code, some can’t; this is for those who can.   The syntax highlighter allows you to make a nice representation out of how the code is displayed in your post.
  13. Wordfence Security
    • Scan (and auto scan) your WordPress installation for hacks, problematic code and other issues as well as inform you of everything happening on your site; login wise or otherwise.   Worth it.
  14. WP-Supercache / W3 Total Cache
    • Being able to output your page as fast as you can to the end user is important, cache that puppy up.   Only use W3 Total Cache if your hosting can support it’s plethora of features; otherwise it might actually be a hindrance.
  15. Yoast SEO
    • I care not about SEO but to those who do, ^ use Yoast and no other.   The “other” ones put too much of a load on your server, this one doesn’t.
